Halloween

Friday night Beavers had a great time before half term celebrating Halloween and dressing up. They all look great, if a little frightening!

Autumn Bazaar and Bike Sale

Westbury Methodist Church, where we hold all our groups, is holding an Autumn Bazaar on Saturday November 11th between 10am and 2pm.

As part of this event, the District Scouts will be holding a second hand bike sale.

Come along and grab a bike pre-christmas or sell any outgrown bikes.

You can either donate your bike to the Scouts or you can pay a fee and sell it yourself. Any size but we do ask that they are in decent condition.

Look forward to seeing you there!

Beavers Clip and Climb

Thursday Beavers went to Clip and Climb this evening where they all were able to climb up a wide range of fun and challenging walls then abseil back down again in complete safety. They all did brilliantly!

Summer Camp

This years joint Summer Camp was with 77th, 90th, 167th Bristol Scouts and Steama Explorers. We went to Exmoor. The Scouts and Explorers were all split into patrols and cooked all the meals for themselves (and leaders!) on open fires, we just provided some food and instructions. The highlight of the meals was the ‘free day meal’, where we give each patrol £25 and take them to a supermarket, where they have to buy the ingredients to cook a three course meal. All the meals were excellent and ranged from eggs benedict, to curry, to stir fry and for dessert, trifles, strawberries coated in chocolate and spotted dick!

Activities for the week included high ropes, stand up paddle boarding, NGOOT (incident hike), crystal maze and lots of time in the river. The Explorers also completed a two day hike and undertook some conservation with Exmoor National Park.

Here are some photos from the camp.

Westbury 1300 celebrations – yarn bombing

The 90th Bristol Scout Group have been involved in yarn bombing Westbury-on-Trym village. It is part of the celebrations for the 1300th anniversary of the village. The colour of the logo for the event is purple, so it was decided that it would be fun to yarn bomb the village in purple. The Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and leaders (along with the odd exec member) have made purple pom poms which can be seen hanging around the village.

There is also a children’s activity sheet if you need inspiration for how to get involved over the summer holidays – you can download it by clicking here.

Group Camp begins…

The preparations for this weekend’s 90th Bristol Group Camp began in earnest this evening with the great “Loading of the Minibus” event, helped by many eager volunteers

…followed by the great “Unloading of the Minibus” event at the other end.

After that it was time to start putting tents together.

Which way round does this go again?

Ah that looks better…

Nearly finished!

The weather is set too, so should be a great weekend ahead.

JOTT Walk

On the 13th May, the Beavers took part in something called a JOTT walk around Blaise Castle.

Every year there is a walk organised on the same day around the same time (depending on time zones naturally!) across the world for community groups. A local Beaver leader organises this so we joined other Beaver colonies from Bristol on the walk. The weather was great and a lot of parents and carers joined in too, adding to the atmosphere.

Triathlon Support

The 90th (Westbury Methodist) Scout Group is growing which is fantastic news, and as a result we are constantly upgrading our equipment plus we have some plans to expand the group further.  All this does require funding however.

We are able to raise a huge amount of funds every year by marshalling at Triathlon events. We need to provide a certain amount of marshals per event (Parents) and in return the group get a lot of money for their efforts.

You don’t need to be an athlete to support, you will be asked to stand at a certain point on the course and shout encouragement and direct athletes as they pass! Or you may be asked to direct traffic in the car park as the triathletes arrive.

The dates are as follows:

Evening Series (Cromhall Diving Lake): 5.30pm onwards

24th May

21st June

19th July

16th August

Colliers Tri, Tockington Manor School, 12-6pm

Friday 16 June, 2017

*NB Saturday 17 June event – cancelled.*

Bristol Tri Children’s Triathlon, Henbury leisure centre

Sat 22nd July, 12pm

North Bristol Triathlon, Tockington Manor School, am, 1st Oct 2017

At some of the events we may be able to run a food stall which is an extra source of revenue so will update you nearer the time at which events this will be happening.

If you are able to volunteer yourself (and your Scout) to help out at one or many of the events that would be fantastic.

Please email Michelle with your availability or speak to your leader- Michelle’s email is hurstmichele@blueyonder.co.uk

Many thanks in advance
